NOAA GOES-16 Data on the Cloud

This late-breaking session will discuss the just-announced (July 10) availability of data from the new GOES-16 geostationary weather satellite operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). As part of the NOAA Big Data Project, several Cloud platforms will be making the GOES-16 data accessible for computation and egress. Some details are still to be finalized, and the data are still considered Provisional rather than Operational pending final check-out of the spacecraft and data quality control. This session will provide whatever information is known at the time, followed by an open discussion of potential ideas, tools, issues, and focused activities around these data. Of particular interest are thoughts regarding how to encourage and facilitate in-place computation, particularly using Cloud-native services, rather than mere downloading of data.
